Ngerulmud is located in Melekeok State of Palau, serving as the capital of Palau. On October 7, 2006, Palau moved its capital from Koror to Ngerulmud, which is 2 kilometers northwest of Melekeok.
The proposal to establish a new capital began in 1986, but the significant decision was not made until 2000. Shortly after the relocation in 2006, government departments also moved from Koror to Ngerulmud. Therefore, it is one of the rapidly growing cities in Palau, with a series of facilities being continuously improved and developed.
