Ruse is located in northern Bulgaria, on the south bank of the Danube River, facing Giurgiu in Romania on the opposite bank. It is the fifth largest city in the country and the capital of Ruse Province. The city is Bulgaria’s most prominent river port city and an important part of the country’s national trade.
Ruse is also known as “Little Vienna” because of its late 19th and early 20th-century new Baroque and new Rococo architecture, which attracts visitors from around the world. The city has been listed as one of the top 100 tourist destinations in Bulgaria, with over 200 examples of new Baroque and new Rococo architecture that represent its glorious history. Visitors can enjoy a variety of museums, theaters, as well as numerous hotels, restaurants, cafes, and snack bars, allowing you to experience the rich local customs and way of life while learning about its historical and cultural heritage.
The most important symbol and landmark in the city is the Monument of Freedom, built in the early 20th century. At the top of the monument stands a female sculpture, holding a sword in her left hand and pointing towards the direction of the arrival of the national liberators in her right hand. Furthermore, the Ruse History Museum, the Bulgarian National Transport Museum, and the Holy Trinity Church are also places worth savoring.
