Semarang is located on the north coast of Java, Indonesia. It is the capital of Central Java Province and the fifth largest city in Indonesia. It is also one of the many Indonesian cities with a large Chinese population. It was a major port during the Dutch colonial period and remains so to this day.
Semarang is a bustling administrative and trade city with deep ties to China, evident in the Chinese influence throughout the city. Its name is derived from the Chinese naval hero Admiral Zheng He. Therefore, the legendary Semarang Cave where Zheng He is said to have landed and the later construction of the Great Temple are among the most famous attractions in the area. In addition, the monument established in 1966, standing at 10.7 meters tall, records Zheng He’s life and his visit to Indonesia in Indonesian, Chinese, English, and Japanese, making it a prominent landmark in the area. Moreover, the city also boasts a tropical animal park, streets named after overseas Chinese, picturesque foothills, delectable cuisine resembling spring rolls, and captivating traditional Javanese drama performances, all of which are not to be missed.
