The former name of Bwabwata National Park was Caprivi Game Park, also known as the “People’s Park”. Apart from large wild animals, the park is also inhabited by humans. This unique layout benefits both humans and the animal kingdom, protecting wildlife while promoting community development. Community wildlife guards and resource management personnel actively protect the wildlife, not only safeguarding them for the long term, but also improving the living standards of the Caprivi people by developing ecotourism.
Bwabwata National Park covers an area of 6100 square kilometers, stretching 180 kilometers from west to east along the Kavango River, with easy road access. The park is covered with vast areas of deciduous forests, mainly consisting of wild seringa, camel thorn, and Zambezi teak. It is a sanctuary for 35 species of large wild animals, as well as numerous small wildlife and 339 bird species. Most of the time, visitors on vehicles may not see all the wildlife in the park, but commonly sighted animals include elephants, zebras, impalas, hippos, and various birds. The best time for tourists to visit is in October each year.
