The Museum of National Musical Instruments in Kazakhstan is located in the ancient and elegant building to the east of Panfilov Park in the capital city of Almaty. The museum was established in 1980, originally built in 1908 as a military officers’ meeting hall, and later transformed into a museum collecting and exhibiting Kazakh traditional musical instruments.
The Museum of National Musical Instruments in Kazakhstan is renowned as one of the world’s famous museums of musical instruments, featuring a diverse collection of ethnic musical instruments from various regions of Kazakhstan as well as from around the world. The museum houses 53 kinds of instruments used by famous poets and musicians like Abay and Zhambyl. These instruments include plucked, bowed, wind, and percussion instruments, with the most numerous being the dombra, with approximately 13 types on display, showcasing a wide variety.
In addition to the traditional Kazakh musical instruments, the museum also holds a collection of ethnic musical instruments from several other countries, including the Chinese erhu and pipa.
