Santarém is a city in Portugal, located on the plateau to the right bank of the Tagus River in central Portugal, about 65 kilometers from the capital Lisbon. It is the capital of the Santarém District and a beautiful river port.
The city center of Santarém boasts numerous historical landmarks, including a variety of Portuguese Gothic churches, among which are representatives of Romanesque-Gothic transition, mendicant, and late Gothic styles. They, together with numerous Manueline, Renaissance, Mannerist, and Baroque exquisite buildings, form a beautiful landscape. The Church of Saint John of Alporão, built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 12th and 13th centuries, stands as an exemplary architectural transition style and currently houses a small archaeological museum with many important historical artifacts. The Santarém Castle on a slope and the preserved sections of city walls and towers offer an excellent panoramic view. The ancient Cabacas Tower hosts a time museum showcasing different time measurement methods from various periods.
